Full Wave Center Tap Rectifier using Breadboard and CRO Observation

Trade: Electrician | Semester: II

Question: Make a circuit of a Full Wave Center Tap Rectifier on a breadboard. Observe the waveforms on the C.R.O. at various points and record their values.


Introduction

A Full Wave Center Tap Rectifier is used to convert AC into DC using two diodes and a center-tapped transformer. It utilizes both half cycles of the AC input, producing a pulsating DC output. CRO is used to observe input and output waveforms.

Objective

To construct a full wave center tap rectifier on a breadboard and observe waveforms using CRO.

Components Required

  • Center-tapped transformer
  • 2 Diodes
  • Load resistor (RL)
  • Breadboard
  • Connecting wires
  • C.R.O.

Working Principle

During the positive half cycle, one diode conducts and current flows through the load. During the negative half cycle, the other diode conducts. Thus, both half cycles produce current in the same direction across the load.

Circuit Construction

  1. Connect center-tapped transformer to AC supply.
  2. Connect two diodes to each end of transformer.
  3. Join diode outputs and connect to load resistor.
  4. Connect center tap to ground.
  5. Build the circuit on breadboard.

CRO Observation Points

  • Input AC waveform
  • Half-wave at each diode
  • Full-wave rectified output

Procedure

  1. Assemble the circuit on breadboard.
  2. Switch ON the supply.
  3. Connect CRO probes at input.
  4. Observe sine wave.
  5. Connect CRO at output.
  6. Observe full-wave rectified waveform.
  7. Note voltage and time divisions.

Result
