🔧 Allied Trades: Introduction to Fitting Tools & Safety Precautions

Electricians often work with tools from other trades like fitting, carpentry, or plumbing. These are called Allied Trades. Understanding basic fitting tools and safety is important for accurate and safe work.

🧰 What is Fitting in Allied Trades?

Fitting involves shaping, joining, and assembling metal parts using hand tools. Electricians may use fitting tools to:

  • 🔩 Mount electrical boards

  • ⚙️ Drill holes in metal plates

  • 🪛 Fit panels, boxes, or conduits

  • 🧲 Modify brackets and supports

🛠️ Common Fitting Tools Used by Electricians

Here’s a list of basic fitting tools with their purpose:

🧰 Tool🔍 Use
⚒️ Ball Peen HammerFor hammering and shaping metal
🔧 Spanners / WrenchesFor tightening or loosening nuts and bolts
🪛 ScrewdriversFor driving screws
🪚 HacksawFor cutting metal pipes or rods
📏 Steel RuleFor measuring length accurately
📐 Try SquareFor checking right angles
✂️ ChiselsFor cutting and shaping metal
🗜️ Bench ViceTo hold workpieces firmly during cutting or filing
📉 Files (Flat, Round, Half-Round)For smoothing and shaping metal edges
🔩 Taps and DiesFor threading internal (taps) or external (dies) parts

⚠️ Safety Precautions While Using Fitting Tools

Safety is very important when working with sharp and heavy tools. Follow these rules:

✅ Personal Safety

  • 🧤 Wear gloves to protect hands

  • 👓 Use safety goggles to protect eyes

  • 👟 Wear safety shoes with metal toes

  • 🧥 Avoid loose clothes while working

✅ Tool Handling Safety

  • 🔧 Use the right tool for the right job

  • 🪛 Don’t use damaged or worn-out tools

  • 🔩 Always tighten workpieces properly in the bench vice

  • 🪚 Use hacksaw and file in one direction only

  • 🧽 Keep tools clean and dry

  • 🧰 Store tools in toolbox after use

✅ Workspace Safety

  • 💡 Keep the area well-lit

  • 🚫 Avoid distractions while working

  • 🔌 Make sure there are no live wires near the metal work

  • 🧯 Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when using sparks-producing tools

🧠 Conclusion

Basic fitting skills help electricians do clean and professional installations. With the right tools and safety practices, you can:

  • 🔧 Work faster and better

  • 🛠️ Fit panels and brackets properly

  • 🔒 Stay safe and avoid injuries

💡 Tip: Practice regularly to become confident in using fitting tools!
