Construction of Extension Board and Testing
Trade: Electrician | Semester: II | Marks: 50
Question: Explain and make an Extension Board and perform testing.
Introduction
An extension board is a portable electrical device used to supply power to multiple electrical appliances from a single socket. It is commonly used in homes, workshops, and industries.
Definition
An extension board is a wiring arrangement consisting of a plug, socket outlets, switch, and fuse mounted on a board to extend electrical supply.
Materials Required
- Wooden or PVC board
- 3-pin plug top
- Socket (2-pin / 3-pin)
- Switch
- Fuse
- Connecting wires
- Screws
Tools Required
- Screwdriver
- Plier
- Wire stripper
- Tester
Construction (Making of Extension Board)
- Fix the socket, switch, and fuse on the board.
- Connect the phase wire from plug to switch.
- Connect switch output to fuse and then to socket.
- Connect neutral wire directly to socket.
- Connect earth wire properly to socket and plug.
- Tighten all connections securely.
Working Principle
When the switch is ON, current flows from the supply through the plug, switch, and fuse to the socket, allowing connected appliances to operate safely.
Testing of Extension Board
Procedure
- Check all connections visually.
- Use a tester to check phase and neutral.
- Ensure proper earthing.
- Switch ON supply and test using a load (bulb).
- Check switch operation.
Expected Result
The extension board should supply power safely and the connected device should operate properly.
Advantages
- Portable and easy to use
- Multiple devices can be connected
- Provides safety with fuse and switch
Precautions
- Ensure tight connections
- Use proper rating components
- Do not overload
- Check earthing properly
Conclusion
The extension board was successfully constructed and tested. It provides a safe and convenient way to extend electrical supply.
